When we lived in England we knew this breed as an Alsatian and if you are a British transplant you may wonder why the difference in name. The English name comes from it’s  wolf like face which earned it the official name of Alsatian Wolf Dog, a name that was used until the 1970’s when the official name was changed to German Shepherd. It’s more common name reflects it’s working career as a sheep herding dog, though now it is employed more often in search and rescue missions, police work and assisting people with disabilities.
