Stag beetles make formidable competitors in the annual Insect Race (IR) and have taken first prize in this contest more than any other beetle participants. It is debatable whether the success rate is significantly improved when accompanied by humanoid riders as there have been an equal number of first places for both accompanied and unaccompanied stag beetles. Whatever the data may show, the couple shown here clearly enjoy competing together. The bronze sculpture is finished with 4 patinas to create a mottled brown amber beetle and green gold rider.
